It’s not difficult to reduce your household’s water use to save money on your water bill. Here are ideas to help you cut back on water use at home.
You’ll use less water if you always wait until you have a full load of laundry to wash. The same principle applies when you’re using your dishwasher to clean your dishes. Also, skip rinsing the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.
Many standard faucets waste water because they have high rates of water flow. One way to lower the water flow from your faucets is to install low-flow aerators on them. These aerators can cut your water flow by as much as 30 percent according to the Environmental Protection Agency. If the aerator has the EPA’s WaterSense label, it’s designed to save water without sacrificing performance.
Showering accounts for a big portion of water use in a typical household. Switching to a low-flow showerhead decreases the gallons of water used per minute. Showerheads that carry the WaterSense label must use at least 20 percent less water than standard fixtures.
Installing a steam shower is another option. Steam showers reduce water use by about 95 percent (that’s not a typo) when compared to traditional showers.
Toilets aren’t supposed to make noise when they are not in use. A noisy toilet is probably leaking from the tank to the bowl. It’s likely you’re hearing the sound of the tank refilling. Repairing the leak will end the water waste.
Toilets made after 1994 must use 1.6 gallons per flush or less. (We didn’t make that rule. The government did it.) Toilets made before that time used 3.5 gallons per flush or more.
